The power of partnership drives us

The Florida Semiconductor Engine (The Engine) was founded in January 2023 – one of 10 inaugural engines nationwide awarded a National Science Foundation grant authorized by Congress in the Chips and Science Act of 2022. The goal of the Engine is to drive economic growth in Florida and bolster national security by reshoring the semiconductor Advanced Manufacturing and Packaging industry, about 98 percent of which is currently performed outside of the United States.

The Florida Semiconductor Engine specifically is designed to boost innovation in the semiconductor advanced packaging and manufacturing field, create sustainable and innovative public and private partnerships to grow the industry within Florida and domestically, and create high-paying jobs for Floridians.

The primary focus of the Florida Semiconductor Engine is a 23-county region stretching from the Tampa Bay area, through Central Florida to the Space Coast on the west coast, where the overwhelming majority of private sector companies involved in the semiconductor industry are located in Florida.

The Engine is headquartered at NeoCity—a 500-acre technology hub in Osceola County, Florida approximately 20 minutes from Orlando International Airport and within a mile of Florida’s Turnpike. The Engine brings together major Florida research institutions, government agencies, nonprofits, industry and economic and workforce development partners to support the reshoring of the semiconductor advanced packaging industry, enhance national security, create new, high-paying jobs and lead the development of cutting-edge technologies that we use in our everyday lives.

The Engine is focused on the advanced packaging of semiconductors, where multiple semiconductor chips are combined into a single package, dramatically increasing the computing capacity of the chips, reducing power consumption and containing costs. It’s like assembling a set of Legos—the advanced packaging industry stacks these semiconductors, which in turn allows for more powerful cell phones, batteries, automobiles, medical equipment, LED light bulbs and the like.

Reshoring the industry not only enhances our nation’s technological capabilities but also ensures national security, reduces threats from “bad actors” and creates a robust, high-paying domestic job market.

Core Objectives:

Partnership

Strengthen, expand, and maintain a trusted network of partners to create and enhance the capacity for innovation in Florida and nationwide within the

semiconductor sector.

Research and Innovation

Drive research, development, and innovation in the semiconductor industry that is a) responsive to national and economic challenges, b) meets the needs of Florida stakeholders, and c) respective to the limits and gaps in the current research, technology, and industry practices.

Industry and Business

Create startups and small businesses and expand businesses by the development and advancement of critical technologies and innovations.

Workforce Development

Cultivate the Florida workforce through the development and deployment of training and education of technicians, engineers, researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and other community members.

Regional Engagement

Embody a culture of accessibility through the NeoCity Engine leadership team and activities.

Sustainability and Longevity

Integrate sustainability by a) increasing the level of industrial and commercial investment in R&D and workforce development activities in Florida, b) meeting the evolving regional workforce needs, and c) developing new revenue streams through the creation of startup ventures, products, and other innovative business models.

Economic Growth

Prioritize, foster, and practice economic growth opportunities across the state for stakeholders in and beyond the Engine’s region of service.
